Existentialism claims that there is no overarching plan or purpose for the universe's existence; while we and other species exist, we must firmly establish ourselves in the present. Existence comes before essence; a person's existence as a free and responsible agent comes before any labels attached to them based on their race, religion, sect, or other characteristics. It is up to each person to make responsible decisions. Existentialism remains the core of the philosophy even though the underprivileged and destitute can't use their options much.
