“When we are dead, seek not our tomb in the earth, but find it in the hearts of men.”

This is the epitaph at the tomb of Jalal-ud-Din Rumi (1207-1273); a prophecy that has withstood the test of time.



Above the main door, is the inscription ‘Ya Hazrat Maulana’, with the following verse in Persian:

Kaaba al Ushaaq Ba-en Shud Muqaam ,
Har Ke Naaqis Anja Shud Tamaam

(This is the Ka’aba (mecca) of all Lovers,
It converts an unpure one into a pure one)



Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and right-doing, there is a field.
I’ll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass
the world is too full to talk about.

unique and not to be judged

Rumi's love for, and his bereavement at the death of, Shams found their expression in an outpouring of lyric poems,divan-e-shams-e-Tabrizi. He himself went out searching for Shams and journeyed again to Damascus. There, he realized:


Why should I seek? I am the same as
He. His essence speaks through me.
I have been looking for myself!
