British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM (UK): A Transformational Opportunity
Despite decades of progress, women remain significantly underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) worldwide. They are less visible in research teams, earn less than their male counterparts, publish less frequently, and are underrepresented in leadership positions, even though studies show women in STEM are, on average, eight per cent more productive.
Recognising that access to quality education is one of the most powerful tools for closing this gap, the British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM aim to create pathways for talented women to thrive in science and innovation.
About the Women in STEM Scholarship Programme
The British Council Women in STEM Scholarships provide fully funded, one-year Master’s degree opportunities at top-ranking universities and research institutions in the United Kingdom. The programme specifically targets women from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds, helping them overcome financial and structural barriers to advanced STEM education.
The initiative is designed not only to support individual academic success but also to strengthen female leadership, promote diversity in science, and enable scholars to contribute meaningfully to innovation and development in their home countries.
